Top 5 Update

Happy to have another update with this post coming in a day earlier than the normal Monday submission for various reasons. I just got this report yesterday evening as one of our anglers took advantage of a fifty degree Saturday afternoon. As you can see below, his efforts were rewarded in a big way.

Weight: 7-0
Angler: Chris Schwarz
Date: November 28
Location: Warren County private pond
Lure: Ned rig TRD Stickbait (green pumpkin)
Angler Comments: Caught in 5’ of water with a setup of 10 lb. braid tied to a 20’ fluorocarbon leader, 8 lb. test.
Top 5 Weight: 30-5 (7-0,6-14,5-12,5-7,5-4) culls a 5-4

Way to go, Chris, an outstanding catch that pushes your creel into the rare air of the 30-pound club. Only 32 more days for the 2020 Top 5 project with the area weather headed for a more normal range. But you just never know what can happen if you get out there for a few casts. Talk to you later. Troy

Top 5 Update

Another boost for one of our anglers as the November weather continues to be reasonable if you can handle some wind. Today’s catch comes from the bank which has its own batch of variables to contend with in the gusty conditions. But, as you can see, you can still fool ‘em if you can get to ‘em.

Weight: 4-11
Angler: Jim Junk
Date: November 12
Location: Banner Marsh
Lure: Single Colorado blade spinnerbait
Top 5 Weight: 25-9 (5-15,5-5,4-14,4-12,4-11) culls a 4-6

Well done, Jim, and good to hear that you are still finding some success down there. Looks like there may still be a handful of comfortable days on the horizon so here’s hoping someone out there continues to get bit. Talk to you later. Troy

Top 5 Update

Still some bites out there to be had especially with this weather. Quite comfortable for the anglers as you can get some big bites in short sleeves. The latest big catch is included below and it added an entire pound to the angler’s already outstanding 2020 haul.

Weight: 5-12 (21.25”)
Angler: Chris Schwarz
Date: November 3
Location: Lake Warren
Lure: Chatterbait with paddle tail trailer (bluegill)
Angler Comments: I caught this fish in relatively the same location as my last entry on a windblown bank with rock.
Top 5 Weight: 28-9 (6-14,5-12,5-7,5-4,5-4) culls a 4-12

How about that? Two bass combining for exactly eleven pounds coming from the same general area over the last couple weeks (see October 25 Top 5 Update for Chris’ 5-4 bass). I believe that spot would be locked in for every trip during the remainder of my fishing days. Well done, Chris, and quite a year. Talk to you later. Troy

Top 5 Update

Well, the weather has gotten uglier over the last several days but one of our anglers took advantage of the last warm day. Have a look below at the bass and the details on last Thursday’s catch.

Weight: 5-4
Angler: Chris Schwarz
Date: October 22nd
Location: Lake Warren
Lure: Jig head with small swim bait (bluegill color)
Angler Comments: Had a chance to get out and enjoy the warm weather. I caught this one in about 5 feet of water, must have been filling up for the cold weather coming!
Top 5 Weight: 27-9 (6-14,5-7,5-4,5-4,4-12)

A real quality submission and time will tell if this puts the exclamation point on the 2020 Top 5 project. Thanks to Chris for the late season entry. It looks like 66 days remain until 2021 so still time to add a few more catches. I hope to give it at least one more shot and also hope that others may get an opportunity as well. Talk to you later. Troy

Top 5 Update

Looks like it has been nearly a month since the last Top 5 Update but not for lack of fishing from a personal standpoint. During the Top 5 absence I logged four trips, 18 hours and 60 bass before I found one that could boost my total.

Weight: 3-9
Angler: Troy Jackson
Date: October 12
Weather: Sunny/very windy, 67F
Water Temp: 66F
Location: Lake Storey – Knox County, IL
Lure: Strike King Squarebill crankbait (natural pumpkinseed)
Structure: Riprap/drop
Angler Comments: After being battered by the winds all morning, I found a slightly protected stretch of bank to end my day. Also found this solid bite about 50 minutes before I called it a day. Proof that you need to hang in there and keep on casting as your best bites may be later in the day, especially during the fall.
Top 5 Weight: 18-12 (4-12,4-0,3-11,3-9,2-12) culls a 2-8

It appears that my 20-pound mark may elude me again unless I happen onto an even four pounder. The plan is always to take a shot at a November bass before I call it a year so we’ll see if an outing materializes and what shows up. Talk to you later. Troy

Top 5 Weight: 8-0 (1-15,1-13,1-8,1-6,1-6) culls 1-4

Way to go, John, looks like a productive pair of days on the water. Further reinforcement that a solid bite remains so keep on casting as we officially head into fall this week. Talk to you later. Troy

Top 5 Update

I say this every year and will say it again. Don’t put those fishing poles away just yet as there are plenty more bites to be had and a solid chance to give your Top 5 a boost. I actually got to join the fun last weekend and added a few ounces courtesy of a hike around the strip mines.

Weight: 2-12
Angler: Troy Jackson
Date: September 12
Weather: Partly cloudy/breezy
Location: Knox County, IL public strip pit
Lure: Chatterbait (bluegill) with Zako trailer (smoke)
Structure: Flat/drop
Angler Comments: My first cast on the second stop at some walk-in strip mines had me pretty fired up that I’d found the right spot. No such luck on more big bass though as this one would be as good as it got for the evening.
Top 5 Weight: 17-11 (4-12,4-0,3-11,2-12,2-8) culls a 2-7

I haven’t been able to post a 20-pound limit since 2017 but the possibility of return to the club is within reach. Here’s hoping that the handful of trips I have in mind can add those additional 37 ounces to my creel. Good luck if you get out and keep me posted. Talk to you later. Troy

Top 5 Update

The Monday Top 5 Update is back thanks to the return of one of our young anglers.

Weight: 2-4
Angler: Landon Hannam
Date: August 21
Location: Private pond
Lure: Jig with a craw trailer
Angler Comments: I had only been fishing for about fifteen minutes and I had made a bad cast and backlash so I was just reeling it in and then the fish hit right up at the bank.
Top 5 Weight: 2-4

Way to go, Landon, and welcome back for 2020. Always enjoyed your reports last year and hope you get a chance to add a few more this year.

Looks like a heatwave on the horizon but the shot at a fall feeding frenzy will be here before we know it. Warm or cool, keep sending me those fish when you get out there and get some bites. Talk to you later. Troy

Top 5 Update

A couple more bass join the collection. One represents a location previously unseen on the Top 5 while the other is from a consistent collection of waters that just keeps rolling with some quality bass.

Weight: 1-3 (13”)
Angler: John Kirkemo
Date: August 6
Weather: Mostly sunny with intermittent clouds
Water Temp: 77-80F
Location: Dawson Lake (Moraine View State Recreation Area)
Lure: Wacky worm
Top 5 Weight: 7-11 (1-15,1-13,1-6,1-6,1-3)

Weight: 5-5
Angler: Jim Junk
Date: August 7
Location: Banner Marsh
Lure: Texas rigged Senko
Angler Comments: Had a couple hours this morning so hit Banner. One bite and one bass.
Top 5 Weight: 25-4 (5-15,5-5,4-14,4-12,4-6) culls a 4-4

Way to go guys, getting it done during the dog days of summer. Keep up the casting and keep the catches coming our way. Talk to you later. Troy

Top 5 Update

Been a steamy couple weeks until the area heat wave recently broke. And this week we have another dog day Top 5 entry as we near the middle of summer.

Weight: 1-3 (13”)
Angler: John Kirkemo
Date: July 30
Weather: Cloudy with intermittent rain showers
Water Temp: 84-85F
Location: Lake Storey
Lure: Wacky worm
Top 5 Weight: 7-11 (1-15,1-13,1-6,1-6,1-3)

Thanks, John, for the submission as it is good to see someone out there giving it a go in some challenging summer conditions on a challenging body of water. Here’s to a solid August which has always been the slimmest warm weather Top 5 month (only January and December have fewer entries since the inception of the project back in 2014).

Good luck to those who get out and send ‘em my way when you catch ‘em. Talk to you later. Troy
